Multirotor Velocity: Propeller vs. Pitch
AJAS · 2018 Engineering (inferred)
Overview
The purpose of this project was to see if using a frontward pulling propellor gives the multirotor a higher velocity than the multirotor altering its pitch or yaw to achieve movement in a given direction. It was hypothesized that, if a multirotor is fixed with a forward or backward facing propeller and motor, then it will move at higher velocity than one that uses pitch to achieve its velocity. For this experiment 11 materials were needed. Once the materials were gathered, trigonometric calculations were completed. Then the fishing wire track for the pitch trials was set up according to the trigonometric calculations. Once the multirotor model was assembled, 15 control trials were completed. After that, the line was reset so it was perpendicular to the wall on both sides of the track, and 15 trials were completed with the propeller pushing and pulling the multirotor model across the track. It resulted that, when using a propellor, pulling the aircraft forward is faster than pushing it. Also, the data yielded that using a propellor, whether pulling or pushing, increased the multirotor’s velocity. Placing a frontward pulling propellor on a multirotor increases it’s velocity by 2.76 times compared to the control. There were some errors in the experiment. For example, the line also had a small amount of slack in it, and there may be some human error in timing the trials. If this experiment was completed again, more trials would be completed and a more accurate timing method would be used.
