Morphology of Ovarian Cancer Cells Treated with Growth Factors

AJAS · 2020

Overview

Bridget Meyers Marian High School Mishawaka, IN Morphology of Ovarian Cancer Cells Treated with Growth Factors This research observed the effects of seven growth factors on the morphology of ovarian cancer cells. It included pre-plated ovarian cancer cells and the following growth factors: Epithelial Growth Factor (EGF), Neuregulin Growth Factor (NRG), Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF), Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF2), Fibroblast Growth Factor- 9 (FGF9), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), and Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF). The effects were observed through the staining of the cytoskeleton of the cells and taking microscopic photos of them. The morphology was statistically analyzed according to the number of stress fibers and tunneling nanotubes in proportion to the number of cells in each picture. The observations helped the scientific field better understand the relationship between particular growth factors and ovarian cancer cells, which could lead to more precise treatment of ovarian cancer. The receptor corresponding to a particular growth factor can be targeted and inhibited from proliferation. EGF had the greatest effect on the morphology of ovarian cancer cells, as it was the only growth factor to produce tunneling nanotubes and simultaneously produced large amounts of stress fibers in proportion to the total number of cells in each picture.
