Melting Points
CSEF · 2026 Materials Science (Junior Division)
Overview
The Abstract of our project explores the melting points of silver(Ag) and gallium(Ga), emphasizing reasons for their different melting points. Silver, a precious metal, is typical of transition metals with strong atomic bonds. In contrast, gallium melts at around room temperature, transitioning from solid to liquid at much milder temperature. The differences in melting points are because of the atomic bonds; silver’s tightly packed face-centered cubic lattice allows for strong metallic bonds due to strongly compacted electrons, resulting in high melting temperatures, while gallium’s more complex structure leads to weaker atomic bonds.
