Machines at play
CYSF · 2025
Overview
Can you find simple machines on a playground and if you can on which playground equipment can you find them ? I did a research project so I looked up each part of my question .

Research
Simple machines can be found on playgrounds
Simple Machines and how they work:
Screw: Helps fasten two or more objects together.
Inclined Plane:Uses angled surfaces to move objects more easily.
Lever:A rigid bar on a central point used to help move a heavy or firmly fixed load with one end when pressure is applied to the other
Wedge:A piece of wood or some other material having one thick end and changing to a thin edge that is put between two objects or parts of objects to secure or separate them.
Wheel: A circular object that revolves on an axle and is fixed below a vehicle or other object to enable it to move easily over the ground.
Axle:a rod or spindle (either fixed or rotating) passing through the center of a wheel or group of wheels
Pulley: a small wheel with a grooved rim used with a rope or chain to change the direction of a pulling force and in combination to increase the force applied for lifting.
What is a simple machine?
A simple machine is any of the basic mechanical devices for applying a force.Simple machines can be regarded as the elementary "building blocks" of which all more complicated machines sometimes called “compound machines" are made. A simple machine is an object used to change the direction of motion or amount of required force A simple machine uses a single applied force to do work against a single load force.
Simple machines found on a playground:
Screw:N\A
Inclined Plane: Slide (Slides are inclined planes because they are ramps.)
Wedge: N\A
Lever: Seesaw,Swing
Wheel and Axle:Merry Go Round
Pulley:Zipline
A slide is an example of an inclined plane because an inclined plane also known as a ramp is plane surface that is neither vertical or horizontal. This describes the “seating surface” of a playground slide.
A seesaw on a playground is an example of a lever because mechanically, a seesaw is a lever which consists of a beam and fulcrum with the effort and load on either side.
A merry go round on a playground is an example of a wheel and axle because unlike a doorknob, this wheel and axle increases the distance the wheel travels, not the amount of force needed to turn the axle.
A zipline on a playground is an example of a pulley because at their most basic, ziplines are simply cables connected between two points that slope downward. Passengers are fitted with a body harness that clips into the cable via a pulley. These pulleys are designed to reduce friction, allowing the rider to accelerate down the line at grin-inducing speeds.

Conclusion
In conclusion, we learned simple machines can be found on playgrounds and they help make playgrounds fun for kids to play on.
