Listen to the Soil
CSEF · 2026 Environmental Engineering (Track 2) (Junior Division)
Overview
This experiment tested low-cost capacitive soil sensors against a 24-hour timer cycle for watering pea plants over 2 weeks. Each system used drip irrigation with three pots (two plants per pot) and a 700 mL initial water supply. The sensor-based system produced a 105% greater final dry biomass and demonstrated 125% water efficiency. It also saved 47% of water in comparison to the timer system. This work demonstrates that affordable sensor technology can optimize agricultural water use without harming plant health.
