Intelligent Propane Gas Leak Detection and Automated Response System

AJAS · 2026 Embedded Systems (inferred)

Overview

The research aimed to develop an intelligent system capable of detecting propane gas leaks and automatically activating ventilation, lighting, and a sounder as means of awareness and alert. Notifications were also programed to be sent to programmed devices such as smartphones and tablets, with the goal of minimizing property damage, preventing domestic explosions, and ultimately saving lives. The study employed a quantitative experimental approach using a Raspberry Pi integrated with an MQ-2 gas sensor for propane detection and a relay module for wireless control of an exhaust fan, light, and sounder. The system was tested in a controlled environment simulating gas leaks within a room. Variables such as system response time to gas presence and efficiency in gas dissipation were measured. Results demonstrated that the system significantly reduced propane concentration, preventing the accumulation of explosive levels and enhancing environmental safety. The findings confirm the feasibility of automation in residential safety applications, offering an efficient and low-cost solution for preventing gas leak–related accidents. This development could contribute to the establishment of regulations mandating automated safety systems in households with a gas supply. Further research is recommended to optimize the system’s emergency response capabilities.
