Impact of EDTA on Friction Between Uhmw Polyethylene and Cobalt Chrome

AJAS · 2025

Overview

This study investigates the effects on friction of adding ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to a lubricant used in wear testing of arthroplasty implant materials. A pin-on-disk tribometer was employed to measure tribological values. Oxidized, conventional, non-cross-linked GUR 1020 ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) pins and a cobalt chrome (CoCr) disk were utilized to assess the effect of EDTA concentration on friction factor and the effect of EDTA's addition on friction factor over time. Materials and lubricants utilized in the study aligned with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. Results of testing indicated increasing the concentration of EDTA causes an increase in the coefficient of friction with the coefficient of friction beginning to plateau with higher EDTA concentrations. Testing also portrayed EDTA as not effective in preserving the coefficient of friction. However, EDTA was able to preserve the appearance of the serum and significantly minimized the formation of precipitation. The results of the study suggest EDTA as a beneficial antimicrobial reagent for wear testing in joint simulation and further gives rise to future research.
