How Much Hidden Degradation Is Behind Your Favorite Drinks?
CSEF · 2026 Product Science (Junior Division)
Overview
Millions of beverages are discarded annually due to improper storage, yet consumers lack simple tools to assess whether a drink has degraded. This project investigates how four common storage conditions : open lid at room temperature, room temperature unsealed with closed lids, a box simulating a parked car, and a heat chamber, affect the chemical and visual integrity of seven popular beverages over 5 day period. Degradation is measured through pH change, color shift via AI image analysis, turbidity, and visual scoring. The goal is to use these measurements to train an AI model that can predict a beverage's deterioration condition from its image alone in a low cost way.
