Hoods Make Horses Warmer

Overview
Many people blanket their horses in cold weather, yet few studies have quantified the thermal benefits. This study tested whether adding a detachable hood increased neck surface temperatures. Three horses rotated wearing blankets with or without hoods during turnout to ensure a daily weather control for the hood treatment. Neck temperatures were recorded every 5 minutes using pendant loggers for the winter months of 2026. Results indicate under hood temperatures were 17 °C warmer than surface temperatures without a hood. Thus, adding a hood significantly improves thermal retention over the neck.
