Overview

GuardianNose BY: Matthias Garzon Air pollution, allergens, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pose serious health risks, particularly for individuals with asthma and other respiratory conditions. While devices such as the N95 respirator provide strong protection, they are disposable, generate waste, and may be uncomfortable for extended daily use. This project aimed to design and test a low-cost, reusable nasal filtration device that improves air quality while remaining discreet and comfortable for everyday wear. The device was engineered using a flexible nasal insert structure containing activated carbon filter. To evaluate performance, I conducted controlled particulate simulations using salt aerosol to replicate airborne particles and gases. I measured particulate filtration efficiency and compared airflow and comfort levels. Results showed that the prototype reduced fine particulate exposure by approximately 100% (allowing 0% penetration) and reduced airborne gases by up to 84% during testing. User comfort ratings averaged above 8/10, indicating strong wearability and practicality. These findings suggest that a reusable nasal filtration device can significantly decrease exposure to pollutants while improving comfort and reducing environmental waste compared to disposable masks. Although it is not intended to replace medical-grade respirators in high-risk settings, it may provide an effective and sustainable option for everyday protection against dust, allergens, and urban air pollution.
