Getting to the Root of Chemical Warfare
Overview
Objectives/Goals The purpose of this project is to determine which plants are affected by which allelochemicals and to what extent. Methods/Materials I used a variety of plants with known allelochemicals which I boiled in water, strained and reserved the water of each in a labled pitcher. I used a variety of seeds, dishes lined with paper filters which were watered regularly with eyedroppers and kept in a controlled environment. After ten days I repeated the process. Results Appearance and growth rate varied in each seed and with each water type. The seeds watered with pure water were clearly superior. Conclusions/Discussion My hypothesis was not fully supported by my results. The field of allelopathy is already being studied a great deal because of its potential in the agriculture industry.
Summary statement
This experiment is based on the adverse affects of allelopathic plants on seedlings.
Help received
My mom and aunt helped me brainstorm ideas and my parents provided all the supplies and support.
