Flood Guard: A Multi Sensor Arduino System for Early Flood Detection

CSEF · 2026 Environmental Engineering (Junior Division)

Overview

Flooding is a natural hazard that can cause serious damage to homes, surroundings, and safety. This engineering project is a simple, low-cost flood alarm designed to detect rising water levels and provide an early warning. The system uses an Arduino microcontroller connected to three float switch sensors to reduce the chance of false alarms. When the water reaches a specific height, the sensors send a signal to the Arduino, which activates a buzzer and an LED to alert individuals. During testing, the system successfully detected rising water and consistently triggered the alarm without false alerts. The system showed sensitivity to abrupt movement, which occasionally triggered false alarms. This prototype demonstrates that a basic sensor-based system can be used to detect rising water and trigger an alarm in real time. This design is inexpensive, easy to build, and could be used in flood-prone areas to help reduce damage and improve safety.
