Examining Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QAC) Content in Varying Saltwater Solutions
AJAS · 2024 Earth and Environmental Sciences (inferred)
Overview
With the Coronavirus pandemic, the use of disinfectants has become more commonplace. These various chemicals, specifically quaternary ammonium compounds, often get washed down the drain and into waterways. Their persistence in aquatic ecosystems is very harmful to the sediments, animals and the environment as a whole. Due to the particle reactive behavior of QACs, it is predicted that in a solution with more salt, they will be more likely to create a new substance thus lowering the QAC concentration. Salt water solutions were created with varying amounts of salt. A LaMotte QAC test kit was used to determine the concentration of QAC’s in ppm. The Data was configured into a scatter plot to determine if there was correlation between QAC concentration and salt water concentration. The general trend of the data corresponded with the hypothesis made; as salt concentration increased, QAC concentration decreased.
