Effects of Marigold vs.Chlorella Supplementation on Yolk Lutein Content

CSEF · 2026 Zoology (Junior Division)

Overview

The goal of my project was to compare the effects of Chlorella versus marigold feed supplementation on lutein content in egg yolks. I hypothesized that both Chlorella and marigold would increase the lutein content in egg yolks, but that one form of supplementation might be more effective than the other. I supplemented the chickens’ feed according to directions. I collected their eggs and used an online pixel isolator (“color picker”) to identify the hue and RGB values of the yolks. Both Chlorella and marigold appeared effective in raising the lutein content in egg yolks. The marigold supplement appeared more consistently and more significantly effective in increasing lutein levels. The marigold supplementation was also half the cost of supplementing with Chlorella. It would cost only $9.08 a year to supplement 3 chickens for an entire year. It would cost about $3.00 a year to supplement one chicken.
