Does Recyclable Waste Really Affect Plant Growth?
AJAS · 2019 Plant Sciences (inferred)
Overview
When I had first thought of this project, my hypothesis is that the pole beans are going to all grow tallest, the pole beans without the plastic/paper will grow best out of the three, the peas are going to grow shorter than the pole beans, and that the peas without plastic/paper will grow the best of the three. Begin by placing all six cups inside the cardboard flat. Shred copier paper and mix together with potting soil. Fill two of the foam cups up with the paper/soil mixture 2.54 centimeters below the cup’s rim. In the first paper/soil cup mixture insert three pole bean seeds 1.25 centimeters deep in the mixture. In the second paper/soil cup mixture insert three pea seeds 1.25 centimeters deep in the mixture. Next shred a plastic grocery bag and mix with potting soil filling the next two foam cups up with the plastic/potting soil mixture 2.54 centimeters below the cup’s rim. In the first plastic/soil cup mixture insert three pole bean seeds 1.25 centimeters deep in the mixture. In the second plastic/soil cup mixture insert three pea seeds 1.25 centimeters deep in the mixture. Fill the final two foam cups with only potting soil 2.54 centimeters below the cup’s rim. In the first cup of potting soil place three pole bean seeds 1.25 centimeter deep in the soil. In the second foam cup of potting soil place three pea seeds 1.25 centimeters deep in the soil. Place the cardboard flat that is holding the six cup mixtures in an area (such as a window seal) that will average four hours of direct sunlight each day. On day one add 59 milliliters of water to each cup. Continue to add 59 milliliters of water one time each week on the same day each week. At the end of each week measure the growth of each plant and record patterns of growth. The Pole Beans 1 (potting soil) shows 10cm the first week, 24.5 the second week, 32 the third week, and 41 the fourth week. The Pole Bean 2 (plastic/soil mixture) has 18.7cm in the first week, 43cm the second week, 57 the third week and 65 the fourth week. Pole Bean 3 (paper/soil mixture) grew 12.9cm the first week, 31cm the second week, 42cm the third week, and 51cm the fourth week. Pea 1 (potting soil) showed 12cm the first week and 30cm the second week, 35cm the second week, and 39cm the fourth week. Pea 2 (plastic/soil mixture) grew 17cm the first week, 36cm the second week, 39cm the third week, and 45cm the fourth week. Pea 3 (paper/soil mixture) grew 15cm the first week, 31cm the second week, 35cm the third week, and 40cm the fourth week.
