Do Local Bodies of Water Have Different Amounts of Microplastics?
CSEF · 2026 Earth & Environmental Sciences (Junior Division)
Overview
The project analyzed the amount of microplastics in local bodies of water (Fresno and Madera counties). Microplastics can affect the environment and ecosystems in negative ways. There is a large amount of microplastics in our local bodies of water and there is not a lot of research regarding the bodies of water that were tested. Water samples were collected from various bodies of water in the area and were then analyzed to determine levels of microplastics present in the water. Results indicated that lakes had more microplastics when compared to rivers. In conclusion the data can be used to show the levels of microplastics in local bodies of water.
