DigSense Explorer :A Smart Rover for Archeological Discovery

CSEF · 2026 Electronics & Electromagnetics (Junior Division)

Overview

Purpose/Design Goal and Background: The purpose of this project was to design and build an Arduino based exploration rover to assist archaeologists in safely exploring hard to reach or hazardous areas. The goal was to determine whether a small robotic system could navigate rough terrain, collect environmental sensor data, and help identify potential excavation sites while documenting cave markings. Design-Redesign Test Description: The rover was constructed using an Arduino microcontroller, motors, multiple sensors, and a camera module. Each sensor was first tested individually to ensure proper function. After calibration, all components were integrated into a single system and tested in controlled environments containing known hidden objects and markings. The rover navigated obstacles, collected sensor readings, and captured images during multiple trials. Performance was evaluated by comparing the rover’s detections and data readings to the known test conditions. Results of redesign tests and analysis: The results showed that the rover successfully navigated the test terrain and accurately identified most hidden objects and surface markings. The system demonstrated consistent performance across repeated trials, indicating reliable hardware and software integration. Goal Achievement: This project demonstrates that a low cost Arduino based robotic system can support archaeological exploration by reducing human risk, increasing efficiency, and improving documentation in challenging environments.
