Darwin Mangrove Ecosystem Field Study

Overview
The investigation was centred around a field study conducted at the Mindil Beach Mangrove ecosystem. A transect line and quadrat surveying along the line were utilized to analyze the abiotic and biotic factors in the ecosystem. The zonation of the mangroves was investigated to determine whether or not the ecosystem is a typical mangrove ecosystem. Mangrove ecosystems typically consist of 3 zones. Each zone is inhabited by specific mangrove species that have adapted to survive and thrive in the specific conditions of that zone, such as water salinity and tidal inundation. Furthermore, the distribution of crabs along the transect were investigated and the potential reasons for this distribution was analyzed using the data collected on the abiotic and biotic factors. Some of the abiotic factors investigated included: air temperature, water pH and humidity. The biotic factors investigated included: the trees along the transect.
