Mirror Tracing and the Temporal Lobe
CSEF · 2023 Behavioral & Social Sciences Fourth Award
Overview
The brain is excellent at changing and adapting to a new environment. This adaptation is done by the temporal lobe and the hippocampus. Learning is done when a person tries a new task and a network of neurons starts to form. The more this new task is done the stronger the neurons. Certain activities help create these stronger bonds and keep them strong. In mirror tracing a person is given a shape in they need to trace under a certain amount of time with a mirror view. The main objective of this project is to find out about activities that allow the brain to learn and adapt to a new environment. A person will be given a 6"x6'' paper with a 5-point star on it. They will be given 3 minutes to trace the star by only using the mirror in front of them. After the 3 minutes, the person is given a survey on activities that they take part in such as sports or music. Then the same person is given the paper 2 more times with 3 minutes each to compare how their brain has adapted. Each paper star will be rated separately on a scale of 0-90 in which each segment of the star given a specific rating and then combined. After more trials with people, the survey gives a better understanding of activities that support learning within the brain. Playing an instrument seemed to play a key role along with more accurate tracings. The temporal lobe is mainly in charge of learning and in charge of playing an instrument, causing a connection between learning and playing an instrument. There are many studies, especially in the National Library of Medicine that link playing music and learning. Many studies also used a similar rating system to the one done in this experiment.
