A Novel Design for a Robotic Electromechanically Controlled Injection Mechanism

CSEF · 2023 Applied Mechanics & Structures Honorable_mention Award

Overview

Much progress has been achieved in the fast expanding area of robotic medicine during the last several years. It's a form of minimally invasive surgery that is performed with the aid of a robot that is controlled by a computer. Compared to conventional surgical treatment approaches, this kind of surgery offers more precision and stability. Among the numerous different types of robotic medical surgical devices that are available in the today's day and age, the da Vinci system is the robot that is used in the real world. The goal of this project is to create a robotic surgical system that can deliver injections to patients while using XYZ axis control and computer vision. The robot will use a colored sticker to identify the treatment spot before moving the injection mechanism. A practice injection pad will then receive a fluid injection of 4 cubic centimeters from the injection mechanism. The robot's frame is made of aluminum profiles, and stepper motors, linear rails, and lead screws all support it. An Arduino microcontroller, a camera, and OpenCV enable the robot to identify, locate, and move to the sticker. The project's goal is to show that a robot-controlled injection mechanism is a practical idea for the development of medical technology. After testing the robot was successful in drawing blood and injecting into the vein. It was also able to accurately detect the vein an autonomously move to the point of treatment.
