Battle of the Best
CSEF · 2023 Microbiology (General) Third Award
Overview
The purpose of my experiment was to identify a natural alternative to stop the growth of E.coli. I tested both Neem, and Betel leaf extracts against E.coli. These infections are one of the deadliest diseases, which is why I aimed to find a cost-effective natural substitute. To conduct my experiment, first, I dried both leaves in sunlight, powdered them, and placed them in ethanol to make an extract. I then ordered pre-cultured bacteria from Carolina Biological. I performed a disk diffusion assay with the extracts and bacteria on tryptic soy Agar plates and placed these in an incubator located in Ardent Labs. This process was performed with appropriate PPE. In the lab, I observed which leaf extract inhibited bacterial growth more, over the span of 3 days, or 72 hours, and recorded my observations. With my results, I concluded that the Neem leaf extract was more effective against E.coli than the Betel leaf extract.
