Creating an AI Robot for Collecting and Recognizing Aluminum Cans to Reduce Beach Pollution

CSEF · 2023 Environmental Engineering Honorable_mention Award

Overview

The objective of our project is to minimize marine pollution by creating a robot that can recognize and collect aluminum cans on a beach, before they reach the ocean. Aluminum is toxic to aquatic ecosystems due to the metal cations (electrically charged ions) it contains. To produce a device with such capabilities, we created a program to recognize cans using machine learning, and a robot for collecting cans using Arduino Uno-powered hardware. Then, we connected the two programs by calling our image recognition code within our Arduino code. We proceeded to test our model with images of four different positions of the cans, with ten images per orientation. This resulted in a total of forty test images, of which our machine accurately identified thirty-six. This corresponded to 9 out of every 10 cans identified by our robot, surpassing our goal of 8 out of 10 successful recognitions. The results of our experimentation prove this device could effectively prevent more aluminum cans from entering our oceans.
