Every Drop Matters

CSEF · 2023 Environmental Engineering Honorable_mention Award

Overview

Being a drought-impacted California resident, I wanted to do something about water conservation. I have observed that there is a lot of reusable water while we take showers that can be used for less hygienic purposes such as irrigation (without any kind of further filtration). To help me with this, I interviewed a variety of people about their showering habits and discovered that we can reuse up to 50% of the water being used to take showers. During the initial and last phase of a typical shower, water would potentially be without contaminants like soap/body wash, making it reusable. I designed an automated smart water control system that would redirect the reusable water from the bathtub drain to an external storage tank for specific periods of time during the shower. This solution would be cost effective, easy to implement, and have a ROI of two years.
