The Assignment Observer, managing homework deadlines to improve the mental health of students and parents.

CSEF · 2023 Electronics & Electromagnetics Honorable_mention Award

Overview

Canvas has brought dematerialized homework assignments and the ability to have real-time updates. While adding the convenience for students and parents to check homework from anywhere at any time, it also allows teachers to change homework requirements and due dates from anywhere at any time. As a result, staying on top of homework content and due dates has become more challenging, generating frustration and tension in families’ households. This leads to lower levels of mental health and higher levels of stress, as per the parents and students who responded to my survey. To stay on top of homework assignments, due dates, and content, one must log into Canvas multiple times daily to check for changes. The other alternative is to subscribe to Canvas email notifications, which can generate over 30 emails in one day, mixed with personal and business emails, some of which will get lost in anti-spam filters. The Assignment Observer (AO) addresses these issues by presenting a real-time homework assignment status without the need to interact with a portal nor cluttering any email inbox. It is a device connected to Wi-Fi that shows the number of homework assignments due and unsubmitted for various time periods, is updated in real-time, and can be placed anywhere in the house. It uses a Raspberry Pi micro-computer and the Python programming language. After testing the AO in several households and surveying the families, the Assignment Observer proved to accomplish its goal of helping diffuse tensions in the home and helping students stay on top of their assignments.
