How Rubberband Extension and Cart Weight Affect the Distance Traveled By a Rubberband-Driven Cart

CSEF · 2023 Applied Mechanics & Structures Third Award

Overview

I aimed to find out the relationship between the cart traveled distance (Dx), the cart weight (Wx), and rubberband extension (ΔL) for a rubberband-driven cart. I hypothesize that the distance the cart travels is linear to the rubberband extension if the cart weight remains constant, but is inversely linear to the cart's weight if the rubberband extension remains constant. To carry out the project, a rubberband-driven cart was constructed, and a testing ground was chosen in my living room. First, I kept the cart weight the same and pulled the rubberband to different extensions, and measured the distances traveled by the cart. Second, I kept the rubberband extension the same but varied the cart weight. After running both experiments, collected data is entered into an Excel file for processing and analysis. The data shows that the first hypothesis was completely correct. However, the second hypothesis was only partially correct.
