Cartography of Missing Teenagers within the Violence Triangle in the South Area of Sao Paulo City in 2016
ISEF · 2018 Behavioral and Social Sciences
Overview
This research consisted in the analysis of information provided by 185 police reports on missing teenagers registered in the Police Districts of Jardim Herculano, Capão Redondo and Parque Santo Antônio, neighborhoods located in the outskirts of São Paulo city, in the so called South Zone. The region is also known as the “Violence Triangle” for its large number of urban violence cases. The theme was inspired by the work of several authors who presented the relevance of the problem in the city. The police reports were analyzed in order to find common characteristics that could lead to an ethnic and social pattern in the teenagers’ backgrounds. After a thorough study, the collected data was cataloged in a single table - organized in subcategories such as gender, color/race, age, schooling, region and presence of a paternal figure. Information contained in the reports was carefully tabulated and graphs for each of the subcategories were created to be used as the basis for the projection of the ethnic and social maps. Elaborating a map with the exact location of the disappearances was essential, and crossing the data with socioeconomic indicators showed a correlation between the disappearance of adolescents and the great social vulnerability of the peripheral neighborhoods. Reflections and critical analysis of these maps in comparison with other social and cartographic indexes such as the Low Income Vulnerability Index from the Socioassistential Atlas of the City of São Paulo (2015), showed that the ethnic social pattern among the missing teenagers is brown women with an ignored degree of education. We believe that the structured maps and graphs presented can serve as a theoretical model for further studies of other problems in the city or in the State of São Paulo.
