Can a Robotic Mouth be Constructed to Mimic Mouth Movements Made during Speech?

CSEF · 2026 Applied Mechanics (Junior Division)

Overview

My project goal is to construct a robotic mouth that is capable of mimicking human-like movements that occur during speech. This robot is made with various components like a motor and an Arduino computer, along with structural 3D printed pieces. The goal is to emulate the appearance and movement of a human mouth during a conversation. First, you want to construct a robot that is recognizable as a mouth. Second, you want to emulate human movement with that mouth. I drew from the field of phonetics, which breaks down words into smaller components called phonemes. The face can portray the phonemes by performing a viseme, which is the visual representation of a mouth when speaking a particular or a set of phonemes. I found that it is possible to make it a mouth-accurate behavior, but there are limitations to this, such as accurately making a tongue without the use of complicated robotics. I then made a study that compares the robot performing these visemes to a human performing these visemes. I then compared their accuracy.
