Analyzing the Efficacy of Utilizing Machine Learning Models to Predict Daily Hammerhead Habitat Preferences

CSEF · 2026 Environmental Engineering (Senior Division)

Overview

For 50 years, Great Hammerhead populations have been declining. These are vital keystone species in our oceans; They help control sick fish populations and maintain ecosystem balance. As these species have died off, humans have lost millions in economic services due to a lack of fishing and tourism. However, properly managed marine protected areas (MPAs) that are fluid and dynamic, changing on a day-to-day basis, could be what helps protect these vital species. This project found that, even with small amounts of publicly available data, it was entirely feasible to model the day-to-day habits of Great Hammerhead Sharks, proving that fluid-dynamic protected areas will be a vital step forward to protect this, and other, endangered species
