Analysis of Possible Pollution in the San Francisco Stream

ISEF · 2017 Earth and Environmental Sciences

Overview

The San Francisco stream is one of the most crowded points of the city during summer months. Some reasons are its proximity and easy access to the inhabitants of the city and the fluent frequency of public transportation to get there. This reasons motivated us to study the water quality of the stream, because since last year the local Government (IDL) placed indicator posters that enable San Francisco stream for bath in certain zones. We set as our main objective the several types of pollution of the stream, based on chemical, physical and biological indicators, but mostly the last ones. We start from the hypothesis that given the anthropogenic pollution that we observe with the naked eye, the water of the stream and its surroundings is contaminated. Biological sampling and physical-chemical analysis of the water are carried out, dividing the course of the Stream that crosses our city in four zones to obtain a more exhaustive analysis. According to the results obtained until October, we can say that the water in the stream is potentially contaminated.
