An Analysis of the Factors Affecting Make Rate When Putting

Overview
The purpose of this experiment was to test whether using the flagstick affects the likelihood of a putt dropping. We engineered a slide/ramp device so that we could get the same exact roll every time. We then rolled a golf ball 50 times at different angles at the flagstick and recorded makes and misses. We then tested the ball rolls without the flagstick. This process was repeated using six different golf balls of varying compressions. With the pin out, the ball landed in the hole 12/50 times. With the flag in, we made it 48 times out of 50. We also found a correlation between the compression of golf balls and make rate with the flag in. Balls with a higher compression had more misses than golf balls with a lower compression. The likelihood of making a putt is significantly increased with the use of the flagstick using a lower compression ball. This can be applied to all golfers.
