Aggregate Stability and Carbon Stabilization Under Gamma Cyhalothrin Application

CSEF · 2026 Earth & Environmental Sciences(Senior Division)

Overview

The accumulation of pyrethroid pesticides in agricultural soils, many of which have lost about 50-70% of their original carbon stock, poses significant health and environmental risks as pyrethroid pesticides are known to be toxic and bind strongly to soil organic matter. In recent years, carbon capture technologies centered on an atmospheric-centric perspective and carbon sequestration have been emphasized by researchers; however, the component of carbon stabilization, which is essential to long-term efficiency, remains underexplored. To assess how gamma cyhalothrin, constituted by the SR-isomer, the most insecticidally active isomer of lambda cyhalothrin, impacts macroaggregation, a key structural soil process to carbon stabilization and carbon accumulation within agricultural soil, a series of SLAKES algorithmic examination and S.I. Index analysis was used.Collected soil samples were used in a microcosm experiment, divided into 10 subplots, with 15mL of gamma cyhalothrin sprayed evenly over the entire region, in accordance with EPA standards, while controlling for factors such as humidity at 35%. At the end of the 20-day period, 3 aggregates of ~2mm from each subplot were collected and tested for stability and physical degradation using the SLAKES algorithm technology. Between the mean slaking index for samples administered with gamma cyhalothrin (0.80) and the control (0.8566), there was a statistical significance: t-test of p=0.034. This shows that gamma cyhalothrin may negatively affect macroaggregation processes essential to carbon stabilization and accumulation. Correlating the application of gamma cyhalothrin to the structural changes soil undergoes opens up new possibilities for long-term efficiency of carbon capture technology and provides a framework for regenerative agricultural practices and industrial pollution mitigation across affected communities.
