A Study on Epilepsy Management and Future Possibilities
CYSF · 2025
Overview
This study explores treatment-resistant epilepsy, investigating the unique characteristics of the condition and exploring possible next steps in management or treatment options.
Problem
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes recurrent seizures. While many patients respond well to anti-seizure medications (ASMs), a significant portion, especially those with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), struggle to find effective treatments. This project addresses the challenge of managing DRE, a condition where conventional treatments fail. The research aims to explore new drugs and alternative therapies that could potentially offer better outcomes for patients with DRE. Also, the project investigates the future potential of personalized medicine, using biomarkers and stem cell models, to improve treatment strategies.
Method
Since I am not conducting the experiment directly due to ethical concerns, this project will focus on observing and analyzing existing research data on epilepsy treatments and therapies. My methods will involve:
• I will conduct a literature review, researching commonly used current anti-seizure medications (e.g., carbamazepine, valproic acid), and emerging treatments (e.g., XEN1101, cannabidiol).
• Observing how new drug options (e.g., OV350, cenobamate) impact seizure activity and neuronal health in the lab, based on existing research and clinical data.
• Alternative Therapies: Review of alternative treatments such as ketogenic diets, neurostimulation, and surgery, comparing their efficacy and limitations.
• Looking into the future by how biomarkers and stem cell models can be used to personalize treatment for epilepsy, focusing on receptor activity and genetic factors.
The project will use theoretical data found from peer-reviewed studies, clinical trials, and experimental results in literature.
