A Study in Mechanics and Processing for Chess

AJAS · 2019

Overview

This presentation will describe a multi-discipline approach to creating a physical either remote or automated chess player. The goal was to provide a physical "user interface" that was indistinguishable from a traditional chess table, so the user would not be distracted from best strategy. However, the opponent of the user could either be a remote player, playing "over the web", or could be one of 3 different automated "engines" developed to examine artificial intelligence approaches. In this presentation I will first discuss the mechanical and electrical aspects of developing a fully automated chess player movement engine transparent to the user. The second section of the presentation will detail the automation software which is innovative in using crowd sourcing to develop image-based chess training data for one of the AI engines. The other 2 engines will also be described to offer contrast in engineering approach from a user and developer perspective.
