A New Concept of Liquid Xenon Time Projection Chamber for Medical Imaging

CSEF · 2026 Physics & Astronomy (Senior Division)

Overview

We used OpenGATE 10.0.0 to simulate PET scanners using LYSO and LXe detectors. Scintillation crystals were adjustable in width, which we used to do up to 20 trials with varying widths. Images are then reconstructed using MLEM reconstruction in CasTor software. The reconstructed image is fitted with a 2D Gaussian, and the full-width half-maximum (FWHM) is saved. Across all scanner sizes, LYSO detected a higher percentage of gamma-ray events. When focusing only on true 511 keV events, however, LXe showed an advantage. Also, when reconstructing point sources and applying a 2D Gaussian, a clear advantage was seen for LXe systems. The overall detection efficiency was lower for LXe compared to LYSO. Despite this, LXe performed better during reconstruction. In terms of error, longer simulations with a stronger computer could help accuracy of the Monte Carlo simulation. Overall, LXe appears to be a promising option for future PET scanners. It offers high-quality reconstructions and could help lower production costs while being easier to scale than crystal-based detectors. With continued development, they could provide better resolution than LYSO while remaining more flexible and cost-effective.
